Markham thanks Barker for a poem addressed to him. He invites Barker to an informal reception at the cottage in Westerleigh the first Sunday of every month beginning in October. This appears to be the final draft, No. 14 appears to be a copy of the draft version.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
